1/8 teaspoon open pollinated seeds from our gardens.

This is the catnip that makes Hugo go weak at the knees.  Most Nepeta varieties actually don't have a pleasant scent.  However, as the common name suggests this variety smells strongly of lemon.  It needs to be noted that it is only the young leaves that have the lemon scent.  As the plant ages its scent is more like most Nepeta varieties.

Nepeta cataria ssp. citriodora is a hardy perennial that grows to around 1m in height.  In early summer flower stalks rise from the ends of the stems in dense whorls.  Each flower is small, white with a purple hue and occasionally purple spots,.   Deadhead to control self seeding. Grow in full sun and well drained soil.  Grow at the front of the border, edging a path, so that you can catch the full scent from its fragrant foliage.

Excellent cut flower.  Harvest only the woody stems in the cooler parts of the day.  Cuttings must be placed in water immediately to stop them from flopping.  Vase life up to 5 days.

The leaves and flowers can be steeped to make a soothing herbal tea with a mild minty taste and a sweet fragrance. Alternatively, you can also eat young cat mints leaves. They have a lovely minty flavor and a mild fragrance, making them a great aromatic addition to salads. Meanwhile, older leaves can be used as a potherb in cooked dishes.  Catmint should be avoided by pregnant women.  Always consult your doctor before using any new edible flower / herb.

Seeds are sown in either autumn or spring.  Germination 7 to 21 days at temperatures of 16 to 22C.  Seeds are sown into potting mix or direct sown.  Sprinkle seeds on top and lightly cover with potting mix / soil. Seeds need light to germinate.  If sown in pots, transplant out when plants are around 10cm.  Autumn sown seeds in pots, transplant out in spring after the last frost.
