Gaillardia is a genus of flowering plants in the sunflower family, Asteraceae that are native to North and South America. These are an easy-to-grow, short-lived perennial with brightly coloured, daisy-like flowers. The plant forms a spreading mound up to 40cm wide.  Their preference is for at least five hours full sun per day and well drained soil.  Gaillardia blossoms attract bees and butterflies, and the plants will bloom for eight weeks or more if old flowers are removed. These plants are both frost hardy and drought tolerant.

Excellent cut flowers which will last between 7 to 10 days.  Pick flowers when they are fully opened or when petals are cup shaped and the centres are still tight.  Spilt the stems.  Condition overnight with a small amount of sugar added to the water.

Seeds can be planted directly in the garden after the last frost or you may wish to start them off in pots. Cover seeds lightly with potting mix as light aids germination.  Water and keep damp but not wet. Grow seedlings onto a good size before planting out.
