An early bloomer, this compact coneflower provides a vibrant floral display in the garden from early to late summer.  It comes in a range of colours including gold, scarlet, orange, rose-red, cream, purple and yellow.  It has an upright habit with dark green basal leaves and red/green stems. Echinacea likes full sun, plenty of warmth and can tolerate humidity. Try to avoid waterlogging, especially in winter.  They are drought tolerant but perform best when watered once a week when flowering.

Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before planting out after the last frost. Seeds can also be direct sown in early spring or early autumn. Seeds need light to germinate, so do not cover the seeds or use only a light sprinkling of vermiculite. Keep moist but not wet. Seeds germinate at 21-25C. Germination should occur in 10-21 days. Echinacea should bloom in the first year.
