10 open pollinated seeds from our gardens

Dierama pendulum is a graceful perennial with long arching stems that rise from a central clump of grass like evergreen foliage that are adorned with nodding bell-shaped purplish-pink flowers. To me the flowers look bicolour, much prettier than the photo. The plant creates a tall accent in the garden and creates a sense of movement as the flowers sway in even the gentlest of breezes. Height 1.5m.

This is a sunning plant for Mediterranean, cottage, costal and gravel gardens. It is also the perfect plant to grow around the edges of ponds. Plants are drought and frost tolerant once established. Choose an open, sunny position in a fertile, loamy, moist, but well-drained soil, which doesn’t dry out in summer or become waterlogged in winter.

Sow seeds as soon as possible. Plants started from seeds will take 5 to 7 years to flower. They will normally only germinate with light, so cover with only a light sprinkling of compost to about 5mm deep. Seeds can be sown during spring or autumn. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil which is moist. The seeds will take 1 to 6 months to germinate. Transplant the seedlings during the next spring.

Also known as Grassy Bells.
