Sanguisorbas are hardy herbaceous flowering perennials that are perfect for naturalistic, prairie style and meadow gardens. Grow with ornamental grasses, cornflowers and daisies.
Sanguisorbas will add height and movement to the garden. Masses of flowers on slender wiry stems appear from late summer to autumn. Flower shapes range from fluffy to catkin like depending on the variety. Colours range from white, mauve, pink, red to deep burgundy. The plants form clumps of divided leaves usually with serrated edges, that are green or blue-green in colour. Plants vary in height from 30cm to 2m.
Sanguisorbas are easy to grow plants given the right conditions. They need fertile, moist but well-drained soil. And prefer full sun.
Cut back dead stems to ground level anytime from autumn to early spring before growth begins.
Sanguisorbas are excellent cut and dried flowers.
Sanguisorba officinalis ‘Arnhem’ - Great Burnet is a tall, herbaceous perennial that can reach 2m (including flowers). Late summer to autumn sees this plant burst into flower. It produces an abundance of spikes with deep red, cone like flowers. These flower spikes dance and sway in the breeze, adding movement and texture to the garden.
Sanguisorba officinalis 'Tanna' is a more compact variety with deep ruby-red bobbles, perched on tall stiff stems. Height 1.5m.
Sanguisorba canadensis - White Burnet is a clump-forming perennial with pinnate leaves composed of narrowly oblong leaflets, and bottlebrush-like white flower spikes in summer and early autumn. The plant prefers full sun and damp conditions.
Also known as Canadian Burnet or American Burnet.
Sanguisorba officianalis 'Pink Tanna' Great Burnet has bottlebrush like flowers that are an apple blossom pink, appearing in summer on tall, airy stems. Further flowers can be encouraged by deadheading spent flowers.
