Perennial Tall Sedums

Updated: Aug 23, 2022

This is an amazing group of plants that are tough as. They handle our cold winters and hot summers providing a stunning display of flowers at the end of summer. These plants are excellent feature plants, grow them near grasses or even as a hedge.

Sedums are very easy to grow. They prefer full sun but can handle some shade and well drained soil. It doesn’t get much easier than this. Since these plants do not require much water, they are perfect for dry gardens. At the end of autumn, the plants will die back, leaving the flower heads for winter interest.

Bees and butterflies love these flowers.

The flowers are also used in floral arrangements both fresh and dry.

My top picks:

Autumn Joy (Hylotelephium telephium ‘Autumn Joy’ or Sedum spectabile ‘Autumn Joy’) flowers undergo a radiant colour change as the season progresses: from chartreuse buds, pale pink stars that open during late summer, and gradually darken to a rich copper red. Height 60cm.

Purple Emperor (Sedum telephium 'Purple Emperor') has rich dark purple-black leaves and stems are topped with dusky pink flowers. Height 60cm.

Matrona (Sedum telephium 'Matrona') deep grey-green foliage with an edging of pink. Height 60cm.

Frosty Morn (Sedum erythrostictum 'Frosty Morn') vividly detailed cream markings on the leaves and spectacular soft pink flowers. Height 60cm.

Future Stock
