Knautia macedonica is an herbaceous perennial with masses of pincushion flowers (approx, 2cm in diameter) on very long stems during summer to the first frosts. Flowers are very similar to Scabiosa flowers. Plants may be short-lived but will self seed each year. It prefers full sun, protection from wind and will tolerate frosts including the Tasmanian cold winters. Grow in well drained soil.
Plant drifts at the backs of perennial borders and beds. Knautia macedonica flowers will bring the beneficial insects to your garden. Use Knautia in a border, cottage or cut flower garden, or wild gardens.
Excellent cut flowers with long stems and can also be used in dried arrangements.
I direct sow my seeds in autumn, these seeds need exposure to a cold environment to germinate the following spring. If in a warmer area, seeds can be placed in damp paper towel and placed in the fridge for approximately 4 weeks before sowing. Sow the seeds in a light potting mix and cover with approximately 2mm of soil. Ideal germination is 15 to 20C with seeds usually germinating in 3 to 4 weeks. Prick the seedlings out into individual pots as soon as they are large enough to handle and plant out in late spring or early summer after the last expected frosts.
