Herbal teas are as popular today as they were hundreds of years ago. There are many with claims of health benefits. Regardless, there is nothing better than growing your own plants to make your own herbal teas. Fresh is best when it comes to herbal teas. Plus you will be able to experiment with flavour combinations.
However, please take care and research before consuming. Many herbs and other edible plants may react with existing medical conditions and medicine.
Mints
Mints are vigorous perennials that thrive in light soil with good drainage. Due to this they are always best grown in pots. Most will grow in sun or partial shade; the variegated types may require some protection from direct sun. Mulch to keep damp and cool. Frequent harvesting is the key to keeping mint plants at their best. Young leaves have more flavour and can be harvested as soon as it comes up in spring.
Spearmint - Size 60cm. serrated, crinkled green foliage that is pungently fragrant and the most used mint in cooking.
Apple Mint Variegated - Size 40cm. Attractive contrast of yellow green leaves, apple fragrance. Used fresh, dried in hot, cold drinks, jellies and garnish. Intensely flavoured leaves used fresh or dried in cooking, drinks, insect repellents, pot pouri, oils and medicinal.
Apple Mint - Size 60cm at maturity, apple mint plants have woolly stems, fragrant serrated leaves and terminal spikes that bear white or light pink flowers beginning in late summer or early fall. The leaves of this plant can be used to make apple mint jelly.
Ginger Mint - Size 60cm. The leaves are heart shaped with some varieties being flecked with yellow/gold variegations.. The lavender flowers appear in summer. Ginger mint herbs are a delightful addition to fresh summer melon salads, as well as warm or cool teas and lemonade. Finely chopped pieces of mint can be added to softened butter for a delicious spread. Fresh grilled meats taste great with a lemon juice and mint leaf marinade.
Chocolate Mint - Size 60cm The large ovate leaves are a bronze – dark green, with deep reddish-purple stems. The lilac-purple flowers appear in summer.
