It seems Mother Nature has decided to throw us a party to celebrate our first commercial crop of Sweet Pea seeds. We have dealt with drought, snow, heatwaves, fire and now torrential rains. No wonder our Sweet Peas are a bit confused.
Fluctuating weather conditions like we have been experiencing here in Tasmania appear to be the cause of one of the Sweet Peas developing “Bud Drop”. This is where the flower bud doesn’t fully open and drops off. It is a seasonal problem, but some varieties can be more prone to it. So far it is only one bud and the rest of the plants appear to be fine.
Bud Drop isn’t fully understood yet and other causes can be nitrogen rich soil, drought and insufficient sunlight.
